EV Charger Installation: Panel Capacity, Circuit Sizing and Permit Planning
Installing an EV charger is more than mounting equipment on a wall. The electrical system needs enough capacity, the circuit must be sized for the charging equipment, and the installation must be coordinated with the existing panel and service.
Check Available Electrical Capacity First
Before adding Level 2 charging, an electrician should review the service size, panel rating, breaker space, existing loads, and the charger's electrical requirements. Some properties can add charging on the existing service; others may need load management or a service upgrade.
Plan the Circuit Route
Distance from the panel, conduit routing, conductor size, garage or exterior location, and equipment mounting all affect the installation. Commercial and multifamily charging can require additional distribution and coordination.
Combine Upgrades When It Makes Sense
If a property is also adding solar, battery storage, an ADU, HVAC equipment, or a main panel upgrade, coordinating the work can simplify the electrical design and reduce duplicated labor.
